VAXMUF is a multi-user roguelike role-playing game for VAX/VMS developed back in 1989 by two denizens of Strathclyde University as an alternative to the existing VAXMUD. While VAXMUD was a more conventional text based adventure game, VAXMUF used a "graphical" approach to represent the adventurer's world in a similar style to that of some of the other role-playing games on the Strathclyde VAX cluster like Moria, Larn or Hack, except that like MUD it was multi-user. The MUF part of the VAXMUF acronym stood for "Multi-User-Fight", which was something you would soon find yourself involved in, whether willingly or not ;-)

The above screenshot was accurately reproduced to represent how the game looked on a green-screen terminal; it's been many years since I had access to a VAX. The game consisted of adventurers roaming around the VAXMUF dungeons collecting treasure, trading, and killing other adventurers, thus gaining points and experience which in turn gained access to magical spells.

Having more recently attempted a Google search for VAXMUF and discovered that it didn't turn up much, I decided to upload a few details of the game here for posterity's sake, including a very limited "playable" demonstration. If you weren't at Strathclyde University back then and didn't play VAXMUF then you'll probably not find much of interest here.
